Mar 10, · It is a regular show featuring top matches from the German, Spanish and Italian leagues. S4C was set-up by the Conservative Government in when Channel 4 launched in the rest of Britain.
Its status as a beloved national institution was once taken for granted. And there was a consensus that the licence fee was worth paying. And if you owned a telly, you were bound to watch the BBC sometimes. You can get a massive selection of channels with a satellite or cable subscription from Sky or Virgin Media. And you can choose simply to pay for specific shows – a Game of Thrones box set perhaps, or a movie – and stream them from services such as Amazon Video.
In fact, you can do most of the things described above without a TV, using a tablet, old-fashioned computer or your mobile phone. So it could be a football match, or it could be an old episode of The Simpsons. It is, technically, possible to have a TV in your home without needing a licence. However, you might find it hard to prove you never use your TV this way. It does seem a little arbitrary.

Grace had previously worked with Soyuzmultfilm on an animated version of the Welsh folktale cycle, the Mabinogion , and he turned to them again for the Shakespeare project, feeling “if we were going to animate Shakespeare in a thirty-minute format, then we had to go to a country that we knew creatively and artistically could actually deliver. And in my view, frankly, there was only one country that could do it in the style that we wanted, that came at it from a different angle, a country to whom Shakespeare is as important as it is to our own.
This style went with enormous flair and verve and comic panache; but a lot of it was kitsch. Actors were hired to recite abbreviated versions of the plays written by Leon Garfield , who had written a series of prose adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays for children in , Shakespeare Stories. According to Garfield, editing the plays down to thirty minutes whilst maintaining original Shakespearean dialogue was not easy; “lines that are selected have to carry the weight of narrative, and that’s not always easy.
It frequently meant using half a line, and then skipping perhaps twenty lines, and then finding something that would sustain the rhythm but at the same time carry on the story.

Once the dates are over, it’s gran’s responsibility to choose one of them for a second date; this time, without her. She talked to me through an earpiece and she’s such a character.

She told me what to ask and I had to think on my feet and decide how to ask the question without sounding totally bonkers! This was unsatisfactory for Welsh speakers, who saw the arrangement as a sop, and at the same time an annoyance for non-Welsh speakers, who found the English language programmes seen in the rest of the UK often rescheduled or not transmitted at all. This traded as Teledu Cymru and provided significant levels of Welsh-language programming. However, problems with transmission infrastructure and poor market research led to financial difficulties within two years and the station was taken over by its neighbour Television Wales and West.
Both the Conservative and Labour parties promised a Welsh-language fourth channel, if elected to government in the general election. This led to acts of civil disobedience, including refusals to pay the television licence fee, thereby running the risk of prosecution or even a prison sentence, and sit-ins in BBC and HTV studios. Some took more extreme measures, including attacking television transmitters in Welsh-speaking areas.
In , the former president of Plaid Cymru , Gwynfor Evans , threatened to go on hunger strike if the Conservative government of Margaret Thatcher did not honour its commitment to provide a Welsh-language TV service. Programming[ edit ] The headquarters of S4C in Llanishen , Cardiff S4C’s remit is to provide a service which features a wide range of programmes in the Welsh language.
It has also provided or licensed Welsh-language versions of English-language programmes, such as The Tweenies. On the analogue service, S4C showed programmes produced for Channel 4 in the rest of the United Kingdom — either simultaneously or time-shifted — outside of peak hours. These programmes were provided to S4C by Channel 4, free of charge. (Image: S4C) Other than the gripping TV, one thing that seems to have come from the show is a stark rise in yellow raincoats. Viewers were tweeting Eve Myles pictures of themselves in their new.
The production was filmed in both English and Welsh, with the native language version airing on Welsh channel S4C last year, and the English one getting a small screening on BBC Wales back in February. After proving to be a ratings hit – and winning over critics too – the series has been opened up to a wider audience, getting a primetime BBC One repeat to allow England, Scotland and Northern Ireland to get involved too. Was Evan contemplating suicide? You may have noticed there were ropes on the tree when he went out into the back garden while Faith was on her night out.
With mental health problems hinted at later in the episode, was Evan thinking about taking his own life prior to going missing? Faith told one client at their law firm that Evan had been working on a very big murder case. What had he been told? Why is the baby sleeping in with the kids and not its own room? The opening scenes painted Faith and Evan as being happy and having lots of banter, but by the end of the episode, it was hinted at there were some problems in their marriage.
The neighbour also pointed out that Faith goes out drinking quite a lot and would spend many nights in the spare room – could her partying have been a bone of contention with Evan? Who is Alec Fenton, why did Evan have his driving licence, and why was he seemingly posing as him? Three questions in one here, but the discovery of a wig, glasses and a driving license of a random man at the bottom of a wardrobe turned the whole episode on its head, and suddenly we and Faith began to doubt what we knew about Evan.
